Taste Test

I sometimes worry about my advisor Mike. Like myself, he grew up in Massachusetts. But Mike's wife Anu is a native of Minnesota, and so Mike now claims Minnesota maple syrup is superior to New England maple syrup. I mean, just because my boyfriend is from Philadelphia, you don't see me wolfing down cheesesteaks.
Mike still roots for the Red Sox, so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. The only way to determine the degree to which he has sold out is a blind taste-test. So this morning I am making pancakes, with two pitchers of syrup. The one with Vermont maple syrup has a little sticker on the bottom, but I've swapped them around a lot, so I forget which contains the Minnesota swill. I will report the verdict at the end of the pancake eating.

  2. Having been born n' raised in Bruce Springsteen territory, I can attest to the superiority of real New England maple syrup over the "fake" stuff (made with bona fide corn syrup) they have the nerve to serve in New Jersey. Now, its all a matter of personal taste, as I had to serve up both Vermont Maple as well as "fake syrup" to my own children whenever their Dad cooked up the weekend pancakes. Suz always chose the light Vermont Maple, along with the rest of the family, but her younger bro Joe, known for his advanced gourmet tastes, regularly preferred "fake syrup." I will add that even though I've lived in New England for over 35 years, I will never choose a New England "hoagie" over a true Jersey "sub." As for what this all means for Minnesota, I'm not exactly sure, but I do enjoy a Philly cheesesteak!
